Speaker & Topic: Suzann K. Campbell on “Introduction to the Japanese Art of Ikebana Flower Arranging.”
Blurb from Suzann Campbell’s handout:
What Is Ikebana?
Ikebana has been practiced for more than 600 years and has ancient roots in Japanese culture, first beginning with Buddhist monks who intended to express their spirituality in flower design. It emphasizes use of seasonal flowers and branches expressing their natural shapes and lines and reflecting the simple beauty of nature. Today there are many modern schools; the Ohara School in which I am studying was founded in 1895 by its first head master. Within each school, there are many styles, but today we will observe the creation of two particular forms called hana-isho: 3 stem rising form and 3 stem one-row form.
